8 Killer Fears You Need to Face and How You Can Overcome Them as a Writer

We all have fears. They kill our enthusiasm, cripple us and make us do less than what we are designed to accomplish. What keeps you from doing more as an effective writer?

1. You are afraid your expertise will not be enough.

It’s a given fact that there are experts in every field. We all want to know what they do so we can inherit their success. How I wish I were like Thursday Bram already to be brave enough to write about writing. But I’m not. And I could not wait ’till I become like her before I start.

Every aspiring writer must be able to start somewhere and every path is different.  Every big writer  started from being a nobody so give yourself a chance and take a big step forward. Learn from the experts but do not look down on yourself. Do not wait to become like them before you explore.

Work on your own potential. You need to trust your creativity and eventually you will become a trusted expert in your own field.

2. You are afraid you’ll commit a mistake.

It sure is a nightmare to write a post and later find out that you have just published an error for the entire world to see. I have done this many times and have felt like a fool of myself. Yes, we strive to make every written copy perfect but failure is inevitable. Effective writers also fail.

If you want to succeed you must give it a try. Avoiding failure means avoiding success altogether. Learn from your mistakes but first allow yourself to make one. It’s one of the best ways you can sharpen your writing skills.

3. You are afraid you won’t be making sense.

Who isn’t? Stop waiting for everything to make sense before you write your post. I don’t mean to just post anything online. We all know we shouldn’t do that.

A fellow blogger advised not to spend an entire week writing one article. We sure need order and organization, but we should not fear a little bit of confusion from time to time. Brilliant ideas do not usually come right away in neat and tiny packages. Sometimes they come out of pure chaos. Some things even start to work great before we figure out how.

 4. You are afraid you will not be able to actually do it.

At the back of your mind you say you can do great but another part of you says otherwise. You are not alone. Not having adequate experience causes us to lose our confidence. But making sense of how things work is a process. You will gain more confidence as an effective writer once you keep going.

Trust that your ideas are on the course of being tried and tested just as anyone else’s. As you learn to figure things out, you will grow your confidence. If you fail, try what you haven’t tried yet. That’s the way it works. As pointed out already, every path to success is different, yours included.

5. You are afraid people pulling you down are actually right.

Ignore them. It’s your own fight. You don’t have to prove anything to anybody either. Just do your best. Useful critics are welcome, but be wary of those who are actually just pulling you down. You  simply need to give it a shot. This world has a shortage of encouragers, detractors are many.

Work not to disprove anybody and see where your creativity takes you. This will save you a lot of discouragements as you learn to write effectively.

6. You are afraid you don’t have all the facts.

One big temptation every writer faces is to study and research excessively on almost everything he writes about. Overwhelmed by all the information you have and yet to see? Act on what you know today. You don’t have to wait ‘till you know almost everything.

7.  You are too afraid to get out of limits.

We usually put limits to ourselves according to what we have already experienced. But these limits are usually traps. What works today may not work anymore tomorrow. At the same time, what isn’t working today might just be the best way to do things tomorrow.

Put wings on your creativity especially when you are just starting. Your weirdest concept now may just be the most workable idea next week. Just give it a try. Unless you do that, you will not be able to give your best shot. Effective writers dare to spread their wings.

8. You are afraid you’ll forget to edit. That’s why you keep editing while you write.

We are trained to criticize since grade school. Remember the red ink on your grade school composition? Your teacher used to say, “Change your tense”, “Wrong punctuation”, “Next paragraph”.

If my memory serves me right, there was never a time in my language subject when we were allowed to just write freely, let our ideas flow and edit afterwards. It was always making sure that your next verb is with the same tense or plurality as your previous one. And you are to do it right the first time. Our minds are trained to edit first.

Too much editing wears down. It will take you a lot of time to finish writing just one sentence if you go on evaluating every single word and sentence you make. Have a separate time of free-flow writing and edit afterwards. It worked well in writing this article.

Seven Things that Can Make You an Expert Writer

Are you hesitant to share what you know because you don’t consider yourself an expert? Do you have to wait until everybody calls you that way?

Most people have great potential but are so hesitant to do something about it because nobody calls them an expert. But what makes a person an expert in any particular field? Read on and gain the confidence you need to do as much as you can starting today.

  1. Knowledge

You definitely know a lot. What particular things do you know which can help others? Can you show this in a way that can benefit them?

Your simple knowledge can add value to the life of others. When you show fellow moms how to bake bread, how to discipline kids, how to clean up their mess and organize their stuff, you become an expert. You will know it when they come to you and ask about how you do something.

Your knowledge may seem too small and insignificant to you, but once you treasure it and treat it with value and improves it, it becomes an expertise that people are willing to pay for.

  1. Focus

Of all the things you know, what makes you talk most of the time? A drummer will usually tap his fingers on almost anything and create rhythms and sound patterns. A parent will always talk about his kids. A lover talks about his dinner dates most of the time. A sales person talks about sales even while having lunch.

What do you keep talking about? What fuels your interest? What generates your enthusiasm? Your passion is the best thing you can be an expert on.

  1. Experience

No two experiences are alike. This is why we can learn from the experiences of others and likewise. What you have gone through are unique experiences from which perspectives, steps and tips can be drawn to help others. Treasure them. Formulate lessons from them. Observe how certain things were done successfully and what things failed. These can form guidelines for others to follow or get an idea from. And because your experience is unique, it makes you an expert.

  1. Action

Having all the knowledge and ideas is nothing if you don’t act about them. Your idea is no good until you act on it. A lot real good guys with very good ideas never succeed because of inactivity. It’s not knowledge that eventually makes you an expert. It’s knowledge that works both for you and your target audience.

Make your knowledge work by making it available for everyone to use. Make an eBook out of it, post it on a blog, tweet about it, and post it on social media, or make a video out of it.

  1. Selling

This is what most writers are afraid of. Sell your ideas and experiences. Sell yourself. Unless you let it out in the open, people will never know you have something worthwhile to offer. You may have noticed that a lot of people out there are not even better than you. The only difference is they sell their stuff and you don’t.

You cannot earn a following without first selling yourself. What you know to be very simple stuff can already be a big help to some people and they will be willing to pay for it.

  1. Value

Having an expertise is one thing. Adding value to it is another. How can you make your offer better? How can you make your readers feel you are giving them advantage and that you care for them? Continue to improve on your knowledge and skills and keep learning for better and better results. This will keep followers coming for more.

  1. Service

Helping others is what gives meaning to what we do. If you fail to make it a point, you will not serve your purpose. Your knowledge and experiences are designed to make the life of others better. Seek to find more ways to serve your followers and continually think of their welfare. This always works both ways. The better you serve your audience, the more they will come back to you.

Don’t wait until someone calls you an expert before you do something. Start acting now and write as an expert writer does.

Write Articles that Promote Relationship with Your Readers

While we all know that content is king and great content generates readers, engagement is what actually keeps them. A reader needs to sense that there is a real person on the other end who’s genuinely interested with him.

Do you want your readers to have a deeper sense of connection with you? Here are simple tips on how to  to do just that.

Make your article read like a letter from a friend

How do you react when you receive a mail from a dear friend? You get excited. You enthusiastically open the mail. You are happily devouring every single word you find. In fact you are drawn to the entire letter because you have a connection with the person who has written it.

It is vital that you write an article in a way that a person would write to a friend. The key is being personal, not academic in your approach. Of course you can do that with an academic paper, but if you would want long-term relationship with your readers, you need to loosen a bit.

I always would like to be replied in a personal and casual way whenever I make comments on blog posts. How does one become personal when making articles? Get excited when you write. Be expressive, animated if you will. Write your article in a manner which is nothing less than enthusiastic and your reader will read it the same way. You should honestly be convinced that you have something exciting and worthwhile to say. This does not leave out, of course, the need to ensure quality content. what I mean is you work on useful and well-thought information and present it in a manner that generates reading excitement.

Let your article tell a story

People are naturally drawn to stories of other people. We are naturally inclined to get curious about other people’s lives. Hollywood capitalizes on this. They never run out of stories that tell about what’s going on in artists’ lives. They use controversies and scandals to maximum advantage.

When you tell me a story you get scenes running in my head and that never fails to generate my interest. I have always been drawn to success stories of big bloggers and this usually applies to almost everybody and almost every thing. The story of human lives never fails to amaze. Don’t be afraid to tell stories from time to time, especially if such stories can bring value to your readers’ own lives.

Let your article speak your reader’s language

A message is nothing if it does not come across. If you write in a way that makes a conversation run in my head, then I will trust that you understand me and you are writing for my benefit.

Write in a simple manner which your reader understands and leads him to do something. If you don’t lead your readers to action then you are wasting your time. It is best to ask yourself why you would be writing an article in the first place. This way you will not be writing just for the sake of it, but you will do things on purpose and accomplish your goals. It will also ensure that you offer your readers not what you think they need because readers actually look for what they really want.If you give them what they want, they will keep coming back to you.

What are your ways to engage with readers? Please share them on my comment box and let’s discuss. Thank you for reading!

Important Characteristics of Writers Who Do More

Why do some writers accomplish more? I have observed many great bloggers and writers do a few more articles, update much more frequently, and just accomplish a whole lot more. Gleaning from them, I have learned what it takes. Here are important things effective writers do.

Efficient writers store ideas big time.If you want to be great, you will not miss on any idea which comes to your mind. Just as illustrators and painters carry their sketchpad everywhere, writers should carry a notepad (IPad, net book if you want). It’s a given fact that writers capitalize on ideas. If you want to have lots of them and have them handy for any project, then be a bank of ideas. Never let a single one escape your mind. Some writers carry a small notepad with them.

Efficient writers test their ideas with time. They treat their thoughts as deposits which when allowed to stand for a while yield interest. Update whatever you have written on your notepad with more thoughts as you let them stand for a week or so. When you sit down to actually make an article, you will not run out of support information to use.

Efficient writers major on simple content. You will find that many great bloggers post simple articles and schedule for just two to three more complex articles in a week. You don’t have to stick out your biggest gun every time you post. Longer and more complex articles can be done twice or three times a week. Stick to simpler and shorter articles when you need to post daily.

Efficient writers know how to use research. This present age has the tendency to make us victims of information overload. Efficient writers don’t allow themselves to fall for such. They usually get just enough of what they need and spare other valuable information for future use. Just because we have much information at hand doesn’t necessarily mean we need to utilize them at one time. To better manage your research, do it before you actually write your article.

Efficient writers organize content quickly. Writers who accomplish more know how to go about their work in no time. Most of them use bullets and numbered lists which are great when categorizing and arranging thoughts. This makes things easier to group together. Bullets and numbers are more friendly with readers.

Efficient writers are great at using words. They know that one can only occupy just enough space for readers to keep reading so choosing their words properly is extremely important. Writers who do more use short and effective language to deliver their thoughts to their readers.

Efficient writers don’t stop. When one idea just doesn’t work, they make it a point to never stop. I know of one great blogger who finds other topics to write once they encounter the writer’s block. When ideas are stored for use anytime, writers won’t run out of topics to write.

These are but a few of the important things I have watched great writers do. These practices set them apart from the rest.

How about you? Share some of your own best experiences and observations on doing more as a writer. It would be great to learn together. Please write on my comment box. Thank you.

Writing Online Articles Can Be Done in Twenty Minutes or Less

What if you could go on vacations and never had to worry about article posts?

If you were like me, you may have experienced what I have gone through lately. I wasn’t able to post an article for almost three weeks. I have been missing like half of my life! So many things happened that I definitely learned so many lessons. Some of those I have written in this “come back post”. I made myself a promise never to miss a week again!

Do you want to be as updated as possible with your posts? Well, it is such a pleasure to share with you some of the hard lessons I learned.

  • Make storage bank of ideas

Stop spending precious time wondering what to write. Start making it a habit to write down little ideas whenever they come. It will be helpful to always carry a small note pad wherever you go so those precious thoughts get recorded all the time.

One great strategy to quick writing is expanding your idea and letting it stand for a few days. Once again, your note pad can be very helpful. Updates or additional information on any topic should be gathered whenever there is a chance. Then they can be retrieved any time you want to start writing.

  • Easy comes first

Don’t undermine the power of simple ideas. They will be the ones you can count on when writing time is never enough. Work on them first and do your best to present them in a well-written manner. You will be surprised at how helpful they become to those who need them. Deal with more complicated topics later. This will give you a sense of accomplishment and inspire you to continue writing online articles.

  • Don’t get caught up in too much research

One big struggle for writers is spending much time on research and coming up with too much information. This makes it almost impossible to write an article in 20 minutes. Select what information goes to your content wisely. You can always use the rest of your research for future work especially when you need to come up with multiple articles or longer content.

  • Use the power of lists

Cut organizing time by using lists. They will help arrange your thoughts faster. Bullet and numbered lists are usually friendlier to readers than the usual paragraphs. In fact lists are such powerful tools they make your presentation clearer and attract more readers.

  • Stay short and sweet

The wonderful thing about people who are writing online articles is their choice of words. Brief and concise is the rule of the game. Make interesting articles which offer adequate and valuable information but are readable in just a few minutes. This enables you to write more or less 500 words in no more than 20 minutes.

  •  Getting stuck is not a reason to stop

One recurring challenge in writing online articles is having a writer’s block. We will not talk entirely about it. It’s this thing when words just won’t get out of our brains and we get stuck. When this happens, push the article aside but don’t quit writing. What you can do is go on to your next article and start working on that. You can always get back to unfinished task when your brain feels like it. This will ensure no idle time gets in the way of your writing schedule.

  • Write before you edit

The writer’s most difficult habit is automatic editing. What I mean is allowing half of the brain to edit everything the other half writes about. Let your creativity work first. Write your article. Just write, no editing. Once you get all your thoughts on paper, edit and organize them. Sounds like something which needs more time but this strategy actually saves you from rewriting a single sentence over and over again.

More tips on writing online articles are coming next post. If you ever went through the same experience I had, please post a comment to share it with us.

Land on Google Front Page at Break-neck Speed Using Social Media

What if you get on top of Google real quick? A friend told me he landed the Google top page in just four months. With much valued advice from another friend, I did it in just two to three weeks. No SEO expert help, no expensive software. Your social media friends can help you do it. Here’s how:

  • Check your friend requests and followers. Start interacting genuinely with your Facebook, Twitter or other social media friends; do not just announce your article. You may be telling people about what you do but they are not listening and they don’t click. You can start listening more to them so you know where they’re at and how your page can help. I have noticed that people whom I have interacted with more frequently are likely to click the like button on my fan page.

You might be missing out on some precious friendship connections because you just simply ignore people. Accept friend requests. I did not just because I needed some good traffic. I realized I should be writing for real people if I want to start writing online articles. You may also begin to take notice of people’s names appearing on the right side of your Facebook page, or your followers on Twitter. It won’t hurt if you’d be the one to send some friend requests this time.

  •   Value your friends and followers. Think about your audience every time you write. You are great, but this is not all about you, everything is about them. The reason you build your blog is you want to serve people. Make this concern obvious on your updates and shares. People are drawn to appreciate efforts exerted for their welfare and they can read this in the way you are writing online articles and sharing it on your page. What’s in it for them? How can they benefit from your article? Once they click, appreciate them. They have just given you precious little gems that could land you on Google’s top page. It inspires them to like your succeeding posts, knowing they have done a worthwhile thing.
  • Direct them. People love to interact but most will not click your like button or make a comment if you don’t ask them. Nothing will happen if you’re not taking the chance. People like being led, so by all means lead them to your like button and direct them to your page. I did this and I landed on Google’s first page. You may be very good at writing online articles but your effort will be useless if not even your friends read them. Leading them will create traffic to your fan page and blog.

More of these tips on writing online articles will be included on my next posts. If you found this post valuable, please leave a comment and share this with your friends on social media. Thanks for visiting!

Create Online Writing Success through Real Relationships

Writing online articles earns you money but it’s more than that. This post will help you see why you need to build real relationships while working on the web.

Online article writers, bloggers, graphic artists, etc, have their own little world. They exist not individually but as groups. They engage. They help each other. They compare notes. They give and take. They share. In other words writers are real people. They need appreciation. They need support. They need mutual relationships. If your motivation is just to earn it won’t actually work. Maybe it will for a while, but it won’t last long. You need to build relationships. Here’s how:

  • Build a relationship with your articles. You will begin to see that earning doesn’t satisfy the real writer. Money doesn’t satisfy a writer’s heart. Writing has to be of genuine connections. It has to be connected to your core. You write from the inside. You write for what you have already embraced otherwise you will feel something is lacking. Writing articles in a manner that is deeply connected with your being is effective online article writing.
  • Build relationships even if you’re just starting. You don’t have to be big before you can connect with people. Most writers will appreciate being followed by a fellow writer. And the good thing is, when you follow them, they will more likely follow you.
  • Build relationship with clients. Clients are usually looking for long-term working relationships and not just one-time projects. You want you to be always available to talk or chat online, open your mails when they send you something, communicate when you are having problems with your assignments. They post reviews on every freelance writer’s project performance. Getting good reviews and recommendations means more repeat clients. When clients are satisfied, they are likely to send you more jobs.
  • Connect with other online article writers so you could learn faster. It’s like fuel to your inner engine. It is tough to start from scratch if you want to be an online writer. You need to know what real people are doing and what they have been through. This makes you feel you are not just on your own and you’ve got big support.Follow other writers’ blog, connect with them and ask   questions. See how they write, find out who dominates your niche, and get into their minds. Readers are not like writers. Sometimes they will appreciate you but many times they won’t. Writers value their fellow writers. Well, there are some who don’t but unless you start making friends and commenting on blogs, etc. you won’t find out. Follow at least one writer every week, makes it easy for a start.
  • If you’re into blogging, post and communicate with your readers regularly. You have to have a relationship with target readers in order to know what’s in their hearts and minds and speak directly to them. This will help you know and meet their needs. I have been repeatedly emphasizing this on my posts. Establishing a relationship with your readers is vital. You can do this by listening to them and being there for them. If you are doing blogs, post regularly, at least twice a week so that when your readers visit your site, you have something to offer them.
  • Meet people through social media like Facebook and Twitter. Let them know what you’re doing. You heard me right; you need to make your online presence known. You don’t have to wait until you have the most perfect blog or piece of writing before you sell yourself. The writing practice is a journey. Your readers will see later that you never stop improving. Start sharing your written content now.
  • Show yourself. Another important advice is you need to let people know you. Flaunt your photograph, don’t hide your information. Clients are looking for somebody whom they can truly prove as a real and authentic person. If you don’t get them the idea on who you are or how to contact you, chances are they won’t.  Hiding behind a pen name may work in some cases like on your school paper but writing online articles is different. Since business is done mainly on the internet, you better show yourself as an authentic freelance writer.

Students and OFWs: Earn Extra Income by Writing Online Articles

What if you don’t have to work away from your family and still earn dollars? Or what if you shorten your time away from your family by earning extra income as an OFW? I’m going to share with you how.

Can you write? Or do you love to write? You can earn by writing online articles. This can be an alternative to applying for a job abroad as an OFW (Overseas Filipino Worker) or at least, earning while you wait for your chance to leave. Earning money isn’t the only objective of writing online articles but it’s definitely one good reason to try the job. I’d like to specifically discuss it on this post.

I was just trying to look for a place on the web to post my products when I stumbled upon “online jobs”. I clicked on the links and found (aside from malwares and suspicious files) hundreds and hundreds of possible income from the web. Writing online articles got most of my attention.

I was surprised to know that there are quite a number of Filipinos writing online articles today. I surfed further and landed on a post (I called it a testimonial back then. I didn’t know anything about posts at the time) of a doctor who stopped seeing patients and wrote articles to get paid dollars. Her link introduced me to a bidding site for online jobs. It was an entirely new world for me and apart from the tips I got from that post I didn’t have any idea what to do. But I tried, and I’m on!

How do you go about it? The following platforms will get you started slowly but will surely teach you how to get on:

Bidding Sites. Thank God, I joined Freelancer.Com. It’s a site where you just register using an e-mail address and post some of your skills, experiences, and portfolio. Then you place a bid on projects you like. I didn’t win projects right away. You usually need to bid at least 15 times before you get your first job. I got mine after three bid attempts. I’ll tell you how to do it on my next posts. I had three clients on my first week.

Pay isn’t much when you’re just starting, but Sites such as Freelancer.Com, Elance.Com, Scriptlance.Com, oDesk.Com can prove a good launching, and can train you on the following:

  • Knowing how to market yourself as a freelance writer and get the best jobs
  • Learning how to choose the best clients and knowing how to deal with them
  • Learning to write for the web (it’s a world different than other media)
  • Keeping up with submissions and deadlines
  • Learning about secure payment transactions
  • Maximizing your income potential

Blogging for money.  A few years ago, bloggers were thought to be just people who post their journals online. But blogging have evolved from being more than just personal daily journals and musings. There are bloggers earning significant income from ads, reviews, marketing and a lot more things. We are also going to talk about this on my next posts. Money is not a problem at all if you want to start. Top free blogging sites are WordPress.Com and Blogger.Com, followed by many others. Surf over Google if you want to learn more about free blogging sites or platforms.

Profit through ghostwriting. Ghostwriting is basically writing a book or an article and not getting credit for it except cash. Well, kind of writing for just cash but it’s actually more than that.

A ghostwriter uses the voice of his client who can either be a company, an individual writer, or any form of business when he writes. You may find it kind of rude to let others take the credit for your hard- earned article. But after fully understanding this type of job, I began to look for it. Ghostwriting jobs pay around $20 to $200 per page. Some ghostwriters earn $1,000 to $2,000 per project. You can earn as much as that as you roll.

On my next posts, we are going to talk more specifically about these platforms but for now I want you to start doing something. Go to Google and find the sites I mentioned. See where you would want to start with your online writing career and get a feel of what I’m talking about. Should you need to ask some questions, or you have any comments and suggestions, place them on the comment box below and like me on Facebook so we can talk. Following me on Twitter would be wonderful, too.

I believe in the wonderful gifts God gave us Filipinos. Filipinos write well. You will see when you start doing this job. I believe in your dreams!

Write for What Drives You

These four amazing statements can change the way you write forever. It’s starting to change mine.

I had been writing articles for a while and got very good results from time to time but I just knew I wasn’t quiet getting near. The past few days I have been bombarded with articles with matter-of-life issues too many they are like pushing me hard against the wall. I realized the following principles.

1. Something great is deposited in you and if it doesn’t  drive you, it interferes with what you do.

Are you driven enough by something?

If you were like me who thinks you have potential to write, you may assume all it takes is willingness and some knowledge.  Not quite.

When I was just starting to write online I had to write on subjects and topics I didn’t have any idea of, and boy, was it tough! I had been to writing about fishing rods, hammers, handyman tools, designer boots, natural health remedies (these ones I really enjoyed to do research and write on, by the way), musical instruments, chairs and furniture, curtains, grills, insurance, gadgets, etc.

The worst I had was writing on different kinds of martial arts! I had terrible migraine. It was either my clients left me, or I left them because I had to.

2. You get better results when writing about things that drive you, things you are passionate about.

While going through this post, I think of a drummer friend. Wherever he goes and whatever he does, he just slips on this neat habit of drumming his fingers (or hands, if he gets the chance) on any surface: his thighs, on the coffee table, on a book cover, on a bed, on the walls, on his head!

This is what passion is all about, and you’ve got it inside of you!

What will you continue doing even without the possibility of earning money from it?

3. When you follow where your passion leads you, the money will just come in.

I just figured out for the past few days, I really need to write. I really need to do research. I really need to study and dig into things others don’t care about. But I really need to write. I wrote when I was younger, on our school paper. I wrote when I was even much younger, creating novels and comic strips for my friends to read. Writing is a journey. Somehow, I find comfort in being able to write online and do my posts, but I know I have not fully arrived (and I bet I never will!).

4. Your passion is a big answer to one of the world’s most authentic needs.

Whose lives are going to be changed once you get moving? Or who will continually go down if you don’t do anything with what you have?

This is the toughest question, so far. But I have been thinking about it just last night, and until now! Of course, I see my own family needing a lot of things. Who wouldn’t? You might think of your own son not getting the medical attention he needs. Or your husband needing some help. Or your bills pile up. But a writer who wants to do more needs to see more.

I see other moms so desperately needing help. I see them in their homes, I see them trying to bring up their kids in scarcity. I see them struggling to help their husbands make both ends meet. I see them dead tired and hungry and I see their children cry. I see them struggling within themselves to rise up and do something. Whether that’s earning through a home-based business, writing online just like me, or whatever, I just feel I need to do something to help them.

4. You were destined for something  BIG!

Some kind of prophetic writing there, huh? But I’m beginning to love this inner healing, this release of a wonderful great insight, an unleashing of a mighty giant deep within any mom has. Aaah… What an awesome relief. Who knows I might also go back to drawing and painting tomorrow? I’m still on a journey, and this proves to be an exciting one!
